THY Bluffton Present to Student Athletes and Their Parents During Spring Athletic Meeting

Teens for Healthy Youth (THY) members at Bluffton High School and LCAHY Board member, Cheryl Rodriguez, presented to student athletes and their parents during the spring athletic meeting.  Cheryl Rodriguez was instrumental in bringing THY into the athletic program to address youth substance use.  Alyssa Rose, THY members and softball team captain, encouraged her peers to take care of their health by getting enough sleep, eating right, and avoiding substance use. THY member and class president, Talia Vaught, presented the Effects of Drugs on Athletic Performance and Health Fact Card, and directed all to read the card to learn more about what each drug does to hinder athletic performance. Kylie Nelson, Youth CIA and President of THY at May River High, developed the Effects of Drugs on Athletic Performance and Health Fact Card for Teens for Healthy Youth to share with fellow student athletes. THY member and Varsity Track Player, Peyton Decker, guided teens to look at the Teen Stress Fact Card and encouraged his peers to try healthy stress coping strategies. Reese Marcotte, Bluffton High THY member and Varsity soccer player, shared the legal risks of using drugs and prompted students to read “Know the Rules Before You Play the Game.” German Martinez shared THY Instagram and made all aware that could follow it to get information and tips on teen health. Amera Mitchell addressed the importance of talking about teen health issues and having conversations with youth about their mental health. In addition, Cheryl Rodriguez, a parent of a student athlete and THY member, promoted LCAHY’s website and encouraged parents to check out its resources on substance abuse prevention and other teen health issues to help keep their kids healthy, safe, and happy.  Mrs. Rodriguez highlighted SAMSHA’s “Talk. They Hear You.” Campaign which LACHY has promoted for a number of years. During the event, THY members distributed over 200 packets to students, parents, and coaches. One of the goals of LCAHY’s 12 Month Action Plan is to drive community level change through the twelve sectors, including the schools. THY and LCAHY plan to be part of athletic presentations in other area high schools this spring and next fall.
