Cultural Competency Training • 05/21/18
English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) instructional coach, Alisa Rhodes of Beaufort County Schools, held a cultural competency training for LowCountry Alliance for Healthy Youth (LCAHY) board members and guests.
The purpose of the training was to provide information on the growing Latino population of Hilton Head and Bluffton of SC, information on local immigration trends, how schools are addressing the changing demographics in schools via ESOL education, the personal and often traumatic experiences these individuals face throughout the immigration and assimilation process, and culture shock. Mrs. Rhodes included information on school and community services provided to these individuals. She spoke about ways she has provided outreach to this subgroup in the community and provided strategies of outreach that could be utilized by LCAHY. Challenges facing communication with this subgroup were discussed.
LCAHY recognizes the need to enhance efforts to reach this subgroup, is translating resources to be dissementing to the Latino community, and is hoping to increase Latino representation on the board. LCAHY is developing action plans to prevent and reduce substance use and abuse among Latino youth.
